How Do Adjustable Beds Work?

A Smarter Way to Sleep

An adjustable bed is designed to move and adapt to your body’s needs, offering custom positioning, targeted support, and enhanced comfort at the touch of a button. Unlike traditional flat beds, adjustable beds allow you to elevate your head, raise your legs, or position your body in a zero gravity setting to reduce pressure and improve overall sleep quality.

Whether you're looking to ease back pain, improve circulation, reduce snoring, or enhance comfort, an adjustable bed offers a more supportive and therapeutic way to rest.

1. Adjustable Head and Foot Elevation

With a remote or app-controlled system, you can adjust the head and foot sections of the bed to find your ideal sleep position. This allows you to:
✅ Elevate the head – Helps with snoring, acid reflux, and easier breathing
✅ Raise the legs – Improves circulation, reduces swelling, and eases lower back pressure
✅ Combine positions – Create a fully customised sleep experience for comfort and support

2. Zero Gravity Position for Weightless Comfort

Based on NASA's findings (also known as the Standard Fowlers position), the zero gravity position slightly elevates both the head and legs to:
✔️ Reduce spinal pressure and back pain
✔️ Improve circulation and reduce swelling
✔️ Create a "weightless" sensation for deep relaxation

3. Hi-Lo Lift Function (Available in Some Models)

Hi-Lo adjustable beds offer vertical height adjustability, raising and lowering the entire bed for:
🔹 Easier transfers for individuals with mobility challenges
🔹 Carer and occupational therapist support
🔹 Hospital-grade functionality in a home-friendly design

4. Whole-Body Vibration Massage

Many adjustable beds come with a vibration massage function, helping to:
✔️ Relieve muscle tension and stiffness
✔️ Improve blood circulation
✔️ Promote relaxation for deeper sleep

5. Wireless Remote and Smart Features

Modern adjustable beds are designed for ease of use with:
Wireless remote controls for effortless adjustments
Memory presets to save your favourite sleep positions
USB charging ports for convenience
Bluetooth compatibility for app-controlled adjustments

FAQs

Please read our FAQs page to find out more.

How long does it take to get used to an Adjustable bed?

It can take a week or two to get used to sleeping on your back. Trying it for a few minutes in the store doesn't always provide an accurate feel for how comfortable the bed is for sleeping through the night. At Better Living Australia, our sleep consultant can guide you through finding the right sleeping position for you and your needs.

Is an Adjustable Bed good for hip pain?

Yes. Unlike conventional beds, Adjustable Beds can be adjusted to contour to the natural 'S' shape of your spine, offering extra support to your knees, spine, and hips. This helps to temporarily relieve pain, and ultimately, you will be provided with a relaxing night’s rest!

Is an Adjustable Bed good for neck pain?

One of the main health benefits of Adjustable Beds is back and neck pain relief. A flatbed may not provide proper support for your spinal cord, resulting in excess back pain and restless sleep. Inclining your bed at 45 degrees provides relief for your lower back. Raising the foot of your bed means that your legs are raised and knees are slightly bent, relieving even more pressure on the spine.

What if my partner and I need different sleeping positions?

Easy. We’re all different sizes, experience different ailments and have different sleeping needs. Better Living Australia’s Adjustable Beds are designed to let you and your partner personalise the position of your respective bed sides to enhance your own comfort. Each side of your Adjustable Bed comes with a remote that includes memory pre-set buttons so that you can achieve your favourite sleeping position in seconds.

Are you a registered NDIS provider?

Yes, we are a registered provider with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), and our beds are registered with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).
